Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy: The Complete India-Specific Guide

Pregnancy is a tricky time diet-wise. Foods you once loved may be repulsive now, and foods you didn’t care about are suddenly exactly what your palette craves. But you have to be extra careful about what you put into your tummy because the food you eat is no longer just for you. It is for your baby too. That means you’ve got to be strict with your pregnancy diet and know what to avoid. The good news is that’s exactly what you will be learning in today’s article, so let’s get started!

Foods To Avoid During Pregnancy

Just like it is important to know what to eat during pregnancy, it is also critical to know what to avoid. Consumption of the following foods is generally discouraged for a wide variety of reasons:

Certain types of fish

Fish with high mercury content or raw fishes or fishes that have been undercooked are all best avoided during pregnancy. Mercury is extremely toxic and can cause serious developmental issues in your child. As for uncooked or raw fishes, they are highly likely to cause severe infections, which can lead to serious problems such as stillbirth.

Undercooked, raw or deli meat

Just like raw fish, undercooked or raw meat can also increase your chances of catching infections, which may threaten the same results. As for processed or deli meat, they are likely to be contaminated with bacteria too, leading to food poisoning. Plus, they are quite high in unhealthy fats and sodium, so it’s good to avoid them. After all, weight gain during pregnancy is not good and even harder to shed after you deliver your baby.

Raw eggs

Raw eggs can increase your chances of contracting salmonella, which may lead to stillbirth or pre-term birth. Any dish that contains undercooked or runny eggs is best avoided. If you must have eggs, make sure they are perfectly good and not past their expiration diet. It’s really not worth the risk.

Organ meat

We’re talking kidney, liver etc. To some people, these parts are delicious and a normal part of their diet and the foods they eat and that’s fine when you are not pregnant. However, if you are, you are better off without organ meat. They are rich in vitamin A, an overdose of which has been associated with grave issues such as pregnancy loss and congenital malformations, so it is best to curb your intake of these items.

Raw sprouts

Whoever knew raw sprouts can be dangerous right? They are typically a part of lists that expostulate “healthy food item”. Yet here we are adding them to the list of foods to avoid during pregnancy and for good reason. Raw sprouts can cause salmonella, which as we have discussed before can be fatal for your unborn baby.

Unwashed fruits and veggies

Unwashed fruits and veggies are also carriers of infections such as salmonella, toxoplasma, listeria, e. Coli etc., which can also pose various health risks. We are talking congenital defects, preterm labour, stillbirths etc. Any fruits or veggies you eat should be thoroughly washed before consumption.

Unpasteurized dairy items

Again, unpasteurized dairy products are likely to cause salmonella, e.coli and listeria, and each of them is bad news in their own way as you already know by now.

Soft cheese

With soft cheese such as brie, feta etc., the chances of getting listeria are really high. They might be tasty and may be absolutely scrumptious when added to pizzas or other baked dishes but even if you crave them, avoid them.

Processed foods

Processed foods are typically very calorie-dense and rich in sugars and fats, which can cause unnecessary pregnancy weight gain, leading to issues such as childhood obesity for your baby or pregnancy complications.

Alcohol, caffeine and certain fruit juices

Alcohol and caffeine can both increase the risk of pregnancy complications and stillbirth. Furthermore, raw fruit juices may contain harmful bacteria, causing any one of the infections we’ve discussed previously.

All said and done, pregnancy is a time to make essential decisions – whether it involves your lifestyle, diet, or even major decisions whether to opt for cord blood banking or not. Every decision should be aimed towards preserving the health of your baby.

Conclusion

Eating well is the secret to a healthy and problem-free pregnancy. As long as you follow a good diet, you can eliminate food-related risks such as poisoning, deficiencies etc. which can harm you, your child or both. Steer clear of any foods that you are personally allergic to as well, and stay hydrated and happy as much as you can. We wish you a healthy and nutritious pregnancy!
